Teen Sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Falls Early as India A Open Tri-Nation Series Against Sri Lanka A in Dambulla

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s return for India A in the Tri-Nation A Series opener in Dambulla ended early as he scored 14 off 12 balls against Sri Lanka A. Despite IPL 2026 fame, he was dismissed cheaply. India A recovered through Gaikwad’s unbeaten 46 and Varma’s support after early setbacks in the innings.

India A’s much-anticipated opening fixture of the Tri-Nation A Series in Dambulla witnessed a brief and disappointing outing for teenage batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who managed only 14 runs before falling early despite high expectations following his standout IPL 2026 campaign.

India A won the toss and elected to bat first, sending Sooryavanshi out with significant anticipation surrounding his return to competitive cricket. However, the young batter’s innings lasted just 12 deliveries. He struck three boundaries but failed to convert his start into a substantial score before being caught by Sahan Arachchige off the bowling of Mohamed Shiraz. His dismissal left India A struggling at 16 for 1 in the fourth over.

Wicketkeeper-batter Prabhsimran Singh also departed early, scoring just 2 runs, compounding India A’s early setback. Despite the double blow, Priyansh Arya and Ruturaj Gaikwad rebuilt the innings with a steady partnership, stabilising the innings after the initial collapse. Arya contributed 32 runs before being run out.

Ruturaj Gaikwad anchored the innings with composure and remained unbeaten on 46 runs, while captain Tilak Varma stayed not out on 18. At the end of 28 overs, India A had reached 118 for 3, recovering from early pressure to regain stability in the middle overs.

Ahead of the match, Sri Lanka A vice-captain Niroshan Dickwella had expressed anticipation around Sooryavanshi’s presence at the crease, acknowledging both his growing reputation and the opportunity presented by the series. Dickwella remarked on the excitement surrounding the young batter and praised the management of his early career development through India’s A team system, noting that he serves as an inspiration for young cricketers globally.

Dickwella also joked about the challenge of wicketkeeping to him, stating that his involvement behind the stumps might reduce his workload given Sooryavanshi’s aggressive batting approach. He further highlighted that Sooryavanshi had not played extensive List A cricket but described the series as an important platform for him to showcase his short-format potential.

Addressing tactical considerations, Dickwella stated that Sri Lanka A were not focused solely on stopping the batter but rather on executing their core plans against the entire Indian batting line-up. He noted that conditions in Sri Lanka, including larger grounds and different surfaces, would present a different challenge compared to the flatter pitches often associated with franchise cricket.

The early dismissal of Sooryavanshi, despite the build-up and expectations, underscored the unpredictable demands of international A-level competition, where emerging talent is tested under varied and challenging conditions.
